It can't have escaped your notice that Christmas is all about plants: a Christmas tree in the living room, pointsettia in bloom, mistletoe hanging from a ribbon, and a holly wreath on the front door. If you fancy upping the ante and introducing more unusual and eye-catching flora into your home, we suggest an arrangement with festive flowering houseplants.
Be inspired by art
There are many fresh and dried flower arrangements that look beautiful at this dark, cold time of the year, all reminiscent of atmospheric Dutch Golden Age still life paintings. Well, it's also possible to achieve the same effect with plants. Assemble a combination of different plant types, with varying depth, height and colours. Add a spotlight and a pinch of artistic flourish, and you'll soon have a beautiful festive spectacle.
List of ingredients
It helps to have an idea of what you're looking for when you hit the garden centre. We've based our plant arrangement around medinilla, a flowering houseplant that steals the show with pink flowers that tumble over the edge of the pot. Behind, orchids in various colours and shapes proudly rear their heads, giving the display a richness of colour. We've also included some bromeliads, providing depth and dynamism with its spiky bracts.
