The Christmas cactus brings light to dark days

When the days get shorter, the Christmas cactus or Schlumbergera takes its chance to shine. At the end of autumn or early winter, the buds unfold and to surprise you with flowers. It makes it the perfect candidate for giving light and joy in the dark days around Christmas.

Schlumbergera looks wonderful on the coffee table or on your bedside table, but it's also often seen as a hanging plant, suspended from the ceiling. With its beautiful flowers at Christmastime, this plant is also earmarked for a place on or near the Christmas Day table.

If well taken care of, the plant will continue to bloom for a while after Christmas, and it will feel happy in a group with other cacti and succulents. Make sure it's kept in its own pot, because after flowering Schlumbergera needs a month of holiday to recover. This means no water and much less light.

After a month of drying out, flower buds will begin to grow and you can water your Christmas cactus again. If you keep the plant in a warm place — at least 20 degrees — and supply it with indirect sunlight, the chance of new flowers in the autumn is high!
