DIY tip: Sturdy plant holder for your Ficus Ginseng

Strong and slender, terracotta and copper

The Ficus Ginseng, with its artistically shaped root and shiny leaves, is the Houseplant of the month for July. To give this plant the attention it deserves, place it on a pedestal with lots of contrast, with slender shapes on a base of solid wood and terracotta pots, wrapped with shiny copper wire. With this DIY step-by-step guide you will not only make your Ficus happy, but also yourself.

This is what you need:

  • 5 small Ficus Ginseng plants

  • 5 terracotta pots

  • Piece of solid wood

  • Electrical wire

  • 20 sturdy sticks

  • Black wax

  • Black paint

  • Drill

  • Ruler

  • Scissors

  • Stanley knife

  • Pliers

  • Pencil

This is how you make it

Step 1:

Paint ¾ of each stick black and let them dry. Tip: it’s handy to stick the bottom, unpainted section in a cardboard box so that the paint can dry easily. In the meantime place the Ficus plants in the terracotta pots.

Is the paint dry? Paint the other part of the sticks and let them dry.

Step 2:

Cover the piece of solid wood in the black wax. Measure the wood and mark out 5 points which are an equal distance apart. Drill holes at these points, large enough to fit four sticks into each one of them.

Step 3:

Strip the wire with the pliers, leaving just the copper wire exposed. Cut it into 5 pieces, each piece long enough to wrap around the sticks. Now wrap a piece of copper wire around each set of sticks and secure them. Place the plant pots in them and you're done!
