These lamps let you grow plants anywhere

… even in windowless rooms (no light or water required)

If you live in a shady house, basement flat or work in a windowless office, you might be familiar with the difficulties of growing plants in sunless environments. But no more – thanks to German design team Nui Design Studio. The creative duo, also known as Emilia Lucht and Arne Sebrankte, wanted to create a lamp that would enable people to grow plants anywhere indoors. Not just in shady spots but even windowless rooms with not a scrap of natural light.

Introducing the Mygdal Plantlamp

The result of the their hard work and research is the Mygdal Plantlamp, which allows plants to thrive where there is zero sunlight. As well as breathing life into a windowless or shady space, it’s also well suited to our gloomy British climate.

How it works

Simple but clever, the lamps use LED lighting in place of sunshine. But not only do the plants contained inside survive without natural light – they don’t even need watering. Based on an entirely “self-sustaining ecosystem”, they imitate the process of photosynthesis. And it doesn’t stop there: the glass of the standing lamp has a coating that conducts electricity, so the lamp is totally wireless, too. Electricity is simply streamed along the surface, providing power. Now that really was a lightbulb moment!

The lamps, which have a patent pending on the coated glass, and haven’t yet gone to market, have been designed in two styles: a pendant light that can hang from the ceiling and one to sit on a desk or table.
