Succulent wedding cake decorations

From desert to dessert: the hottest new trend for wedding cakes

Thanks to the amazing array of innovative and inspirational wedding blogs available now, women are ditching age-old wedding traditions and seeking out new ways to make their big day unique, creative and fun – and it’s all in the little touches.

And what better place to start than with that all-important centrepiece – the wedding cake? For a look that’s pretty without being saccharine-sweet and elegant without being dated, succulents make a wedding cake decoration with a difference – and they look pretty fine in a bridal bouquet, too.

And no, we’re not talking about prickly cacti here – think beautiful, elegant plants in soft, feminine shades.

Here are a few creative ideas to get started:

Simply sweet

One lone succulent attached like a corsage brooch to a smooth, white, tiered cake, looks beautifully simple – perfect for a chic and elegant city wedding. Or if that sounds a little too minimalist, wrap a simple ribbon around the bottom tier.

Soft shades of grey, green, pink, purple…

One of the reasons succulents make such beautiful wedding cake accompaniments is the delicacy of their colours. From frosted mint greens, dusky pinks and cool blues to rich emeralds and deep purples, whatever your taste, there’s a hue for you. Stick to one colour palette or mix things up with contrasting shades.

Cascading colour

For a fairytale finish, have your succulents swirl around the cake, like a creeping vine of colour. A mixture of shapes, sizes, colours and textures makes for a more natural and organic effect. Finish with one large succulent on the top of the cake – the crowning glory.

Petal power

If the succulent colour palette is a little too muted for your tastes, don’t be afraid to mix it with bold accents of colour to complement your bouquet and décor. See a beautiful example of succulents paired with vivid orange blooms and yellow asteracea at Green Wedding Shoes.

Sugar succulents

Did you know that ‘sugar succulents’ are a thing right now? To complement the real ones adorning your cake, these edible versions make super-sweet favours for your guests. Check out this how-to lesson on Craftsy.
