Gift Guide: Plant patches and pins

We’re going through a prickly patch

The cactus is the fashion motif of the moment, adorning everything from patches and pins to porcelain and posters – and seen everywhere from the catwalk to Coachella.

We especially love the trend for accessories (think patches, pins, hair clips and brooches) adorned with our favourite prickly plant – and not forgetting its partner in crime, the sartorial succulent.

These whimsical accessories make covetable and collectable gifts and can be used to customise just about any item in your wardrobe, from jackets and dresses to headbands and bags.

Meet Macon & Lesquoy

If you want a trend to be executed in style, ask a French deign duo. That’s why we have fallen for these uber-chic hand-embroidered plant accessories from Macon & Lesquoy (a.k.a. Marie Macon and Anne Laure Lesquoy), with cacti leading the charge.

The iconic large “prickly pear” brooch would make the ideal lapel decoration for a winter coat or blazer, while the small “cactus” pin is crying out to be fixed to a denim jacket or canvas bag with a cluster of other pins.

The large “cactus flower” hairpin with its intricate hand-embroidered jewels is perfect for giving your barnet a botanical flourish. Or, if you prefer your plants less prickly, why no opt for the ”tree” brooch or make a statement with the very large “rubber leaf” brooch, which is “visible from the moon” say the wry duo.

More prickly pins

If you want an inkling of how big the cactus patch trend is, type ‘cactus patch’ into the Etsy search engine and browse through hundreds of designs from creative sellers around the world. This sequined duo is perfect for adding a touch of sparkle to faded jeans or a plain black tee. Or why not opt for this multicoloured Mexican plant complete with Aztec pot?
