DIY Essential oil botanical room spray

The gift of scent with a handmade, fresh botanical room spray

When it comes to giving gifts, people often quote the phrase, "It's the thought that counts." In this instance, the old saying is true. We all love unique, homemade gifts, but the problem is we don't always have time to make them, despite our best intentions. Fortunately, this simple but special gift of homemade room fragrances enriched with essential oils courtesy of Jenni Kayne ticks all the boxes. It's easy to make, and we'd be thrilled to receive it as a present.

Which plants to use?

Various deliciously fragrant herbs can be used to create a different fresh-smelling scent for each moment in the day, and each room in the house. For example, a well-placed spritz of mint in the bathroom is perfect for waking up in the morning. Rosemary, on the other hand, gives off a woody and warm aroma that suits the living room very well. Soft, soothing lavender goes down a treat in the bedroom, where it helps us settle our heads for a good night's sleep. If you're struggling for choice, then try lemon balm, which leaves a fresh citrus scent in every room.

You’ll need:

  • 6 tbsp filtered water
  • 10-40 drops of pure botanical essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon of vodka (you can create an alcohol-free version using just water)
  • 1 small glass spray bottle (see if you can upcycle an old perfume bottle)
  • Twine
  • Fresh or dried botanicals that correspond with your essential oils

That's all you need for a beautiful, personal gift that comes straight from the heart and will keep you and your friends in good spirits for a long time. The complete DIY and even more beautiful photos can be found on Jenni Kayne's blog. Have fun!
