DIY: Concrete planters

Crumbling concrete makes a surprisingly beautiful foil for your foliage

Exposed brick, distressed paintwork, rusty metal pipes… the trend for ‘urban decay’ and all things industrial has been dominating the interiors world for some time now. But for those who don’t live in a converted warehouse – or prefer a cleaner, more minimalist approach – it’s all about the little touches.

Concrete planters make a nod to the industrial trend while also making the perfect accompaniment to white walls and modernist furniture.

Any plant will look fabulous in your concrete pots, but we recommend succulents as their smooth green leaves provide the perfect textural contrast to the crumbling concrete – plus, they’re easy to care for.

There are a number of blogs offering their own take on the trend from rough and ready, to smoothe and shiny. We love this ultra-textured version from Heather at the Growing Spaces blog. It is surprisingly easy to make:

What you’ll need…

  • Protective gloves
  • Two containers for each planter mould (one approximately 1.5 inches smaller than the other)
  • Concrete – use builders’ sand for a smoother finish or ballast for a rougher texture
  • A small shovel (for scooping the concrete mix)
