DIY: hanging plant lamp

Let your houseplants shine in the spotlight

A pendant lamp and hanging planter in one, this stroke of design genius looks like the kind of item you’d expect to find on one of those high-end designer homeware websites.

But far from setting you back a small fortune, this little beauty from the Design Sponge blog can be knocked up in no time at home out of nothing more than a couple of bowls, some wire and a wooden block.

Embrace your space

It’s such a waste that so many homes have nothing but empty space on offer at that all important eye level. Suspending houseplants draws the eye upwards and breathes life into the top half of the room.

Hanging planters are also a brilliant way to bring foliage into a small space where table, shelf and floor space is limited. This one has the added advantage of putting your favourite plants in the spotlight (literally!).

What you’ll need:

  • Round Bowl/ Sphere storage, or two similar bowls
  • Wood block
  • Thine wire
  • Light fixture, socket and LED bulb
  • Drill
  • Two different drill bits (one that fits the lamp cord; one for the wire holes)
  • Pliers

The perfect plant for your planter lamp

A light-loving plant that’s happy to bask in the bright light is essential, while hanging plants will look pretty, cascading from the bowl. Ticking both of those boxes is the ivy – and you can see from the picture how beautifully its foliage works with the sleek design of the lamp.
