Transform your bathroom into a spa…with plants

Turn bath-time into a botanical sanctuary

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, the bathroom is the sanctuary – a place to refresh, relax, and cleanse the body… and soul! And as such, it should be calm, clean and as fresh as a daisy. Stepping into your bathroom should feel like stepping into a luxury spa – and with the help of a few plants, and Free People's brilliant blog post as inspiration, it’s not that difficult to achieve.

The power of botanics

We’ve all seen those shampoo adverts with the woman showering under a tropical waterfall, against a lush and exotic botanical backdrop. Well, while we can’t promise the full tropical experience of a jungle shower, introducing plants and foliage to your space will bring some of the magic of nature to your bath and shower time.

Purify the air

Some bathroom toiletries and cleaning products emit toxins into the air. A couple of strategically placed houseplants will not only breathe life into your bathroom, they could detox the atmosphere, too. The mother-in-law’s tongue (snake plant), for instance, is a great choice for the bathroom. Loving steamy, humid conditions, and able to thrive in low light, it is known for filtering out formaldehyde, commonly found in cleaning and bathroom products. Plus, its long, vertical leaves mean it won’t be vying for space on your bathroom shelf. Read more about air-purifying plants in our guide.

Invigorate your shower

We all know the invigorating powers of a morning shower but if you want to supercharge the freshness, a bunch of eucalyptus could do the trick. The Free People blog recommends hanging a few branches of eucalpyptus upside down from the showerhead with twine, to fill the shower with its uplifting and refreshing scent.

Choose the right plants

While the low light and high humidity of the bathroom might be a tropical paradise for some plants, it’s a recipe for withering and wilting for others. So it’s essential you choose the right plants to suit the steamy conditions. The orchid thrives in warm and humid conditions and with its serene beauty is a sure-fire way to give your room the look of a five-star luxury spa. The ivy also thrives in bathroom conditions and makes a perfect shelf companion with its trailing leaves. If it’s low-maintenance you’re looking for, opt for the philodendron with its lush green foliage. It can survive in a small container of water without no soil.
