3 hanging plants for the sunnier months

A simple way to bring your patio to life

If the term ‘hanging basket’ conjures up images of quaint country cottages and granny’s geraniums, it’s time for a rethink. While traditional hanging baskets are more commonly associated with a riot of colourful blooms, foliage plants can be equally effective for a more subtle and modern take on the look.

The key is to mix it up and explore unusual textures. Here are three of our favourites:

Million Bells

For a colourful cascade of blooms, Million Bells is the ideal hanging basket. Easy to care for, this plant requires organically rich, moist and well-drained soil and flourishes in the sunshine.

Staghorn fern

It’s a fern but not as you know it – and not a feathery frond in sight. The clue is in the name with this eye-catching plant that has leaves resembling the curved and sculptural antlers of a stag. Plant it in a basket or even mount it on a wooden board on your exterior wall of garden fence.

Jade

Jade might more commonly associated with bonsai trees than hanging baskets but resist pruning and let it do its thing and you will end up with a beautiful cascade of pretty, delicate leaves. Ideal for smaller outdoor spaces.
